USES - Ideal for carvings, beads, and other forms of jewelry - Russia, Australia, British Columbia and the United States
SOURCES VALUE - $2.00 to $6.00 per pound wholesale. Source of information: Van Nostrands Standard Catalog of Gems - Rhodonite is not plentiful. A recent 'Annual Buyers Guide of Lapidary Journal' in their product index for North America lists only six dealers. Germany, Korea, Taiwan, and Mexico are the largest foreign beadmakers and product manufacturers of rhodonite. It was also valued highly in Old Russia as a material for carvings along with Lapis and Malachite.
COMMENTS The rhodonite mine in Fluvanna was originally worked as a manganese prospect 60 to 70 years ago or more. There was not extensive work done; however, the rhodonite occurs on the surface with no overburden, in an unweathered state. In addition to the rhodonite, there are at least two other materials occuring in the same formation of marketable values. These are piedmontite and jasper, which could also be used for the gem and jewelry trade, and they occur likewise in substantial amounts.
