? Alcohol Stoves for Cooking Purposes
While alcohol stoves may be unfamiliar to most Americans, the idea was first practically applied in Germany; millions of gallons of denatured alcohol are still used annually for cooking purposes by families of moderate means. DENATURED ALCOHOL AS A FUEL FOR COOKING IS ABSOLUTELY SAFE, CLEAN AND ODERLESS. As the combustion is perfect there is no smoke, ashes nor dust. By use of proper appliances all kinds of food can be cooked rapidly, easily and far more cheaply than the same cooking performed by other means, i.e. butane, propane and white gas stoves. Denatured alcohol is distinctly a farm product; it may be distilled from corn, potatoes and other farm products. It is, therefore, the ordinary alcohol of commerce to which the word “denatured” has been applied to signify that its nature has been changed by rendering it undrinkable, or unfit for use as a beverage.
Alcohol burns well in an un-pressurized burner, so alcohol stoves are often stone-simple. THIS LACK OF COMPLEXITY MEANS THAT THERE IS VIRTUALLY NOTHING THAT CAN GO WRONG. In Roland Mueser’s book Long-Distance Hiking: Lessons from the Appalachian Trail, Mueser did a survey of stoves used by thru-hikers and found that alcohol was the only stove type with a ZERO PERCENT FAILURE RATE.
HE SURVEYED 126 THRU-HIKERS AFTER HIS 1989 THRU-HIKE ON THE PARTICULAR
TYPE OF STOVE THAT THEY USED ON THEIR JOURNEY FROM GEORGIA TO MAINE. THE
BELOW TABLE SUMMARIZES HIS RESULTS:
| Manufacturer | Number of People Using Stove | Percent of Total | Failure Rate |
| "MSR"
Mountain Safety Research |
59 | 47% | 15% |
| Coleman Peak1 | 26 | 21% | 8% |
| Optimus SVEA Suunto | 19 | 15% | 5% |
| Various Butane Propane | 12 | 9% | 17% |
| Various Alcohol | 6 | 5% | 0% |
| None | 4 | 3% | -- |
AS CAN BE SEEN, THE DATA INDICATE THAT ALL OF THE POPULAR STOVES THAT WERE USED BY THRU-HIKERS HAD FAILED THEM AT ONE TIME OR ANOTHER EXCEPT FOR THE HIKERS THAT USED ALCOHOL STOVES, THEY WERE THE ONLY ONES THAT HAD A STOVE FAILURE PERCENTAGE OF 0%. All the rest had stove failure rates between 5 and 17% of the time. NO MOVING PARTS IN AN ALCOHOL STOVE, NEVER WORRY ABOUT A CLOGGED FUEL LINE OR PUMP FAILURE...ALCOHOL STOVES LIGHT EVERY TIME. Makes the most sense for a thru-hiker (or any outdoors men) in my opinion…
Alcohol, unlike white gas, butane and propane used in many of the popular commercial models today, is not a petroleum by-product and is less damaging to the environment. Alcohol vapor is relatively light and less volatile compared to the vapor of petroleum fuels, it is less likely to concentrate and create a hazard, burning alcohol can be extinguished with water unlike petroleum products used in many of the popular commercial stoves without fear of dangerous flare ups. Alcohol stoves don’t flare up as often as white gas stoves, un-pressurized alcohol stoves are quiet and don’t intrude on the wilderness experience the way the pressurized stoves can. The price of denatured alcohol compares favorably to the cost of propane, butane and white gas. THE LACK OF COMPLEXITY IN CONSTRUCTION MEANS THAT ALCOHOL STOVES ARE OFTEN THE LIGHTEST AVAILABLE.

? Operation and Performance
To use the True Lite Stove, a small amount of fuel (3.5 fl oz ~ 7 tbsp) is poured into the stove and ignited. Once lit the flame is small at first, only burning from the inner chamber, requiring about a minute the fuel is warmed and its vapor passes through the flame ports at the top of the stove, this forms a hot clean burning fire. A pot is then placed directly on top of the stove further increasing fuel pressure by blocking the top fuel ports; this stove doubles as its own pot stand (primary flame ports are on the side). Enough heat from the flame is passed to the fuel to maintain full combustion until the fuel runs out, a True Lite Stove will maintain combustion for approx 35 minutes on a full fuel reservoir (3.5 fl oz ~ 7 tbsp).

The True Lite Stove can outperform many commercial models in cold or high altitude environments, where propane and butane canisters can fail. Due to the light weight compared to some commercial stoves, backpackers can reduce pack weight with this stove, which makes this design popular among ultralight backpackers. A True Lite Stove weighs only 1.8 oz, compared to three ounces for the lightest gas stoves. Many commercial stoves also require special fuel canisters, adding to overall stove weight as well as taking up much needed space in your pack. Let's face it, once empty, nobody wants to haul empty fuel canisters around with them! No such canisters are necessary in a True Lite Stove; denatured alcohol can be carried in virtually any light weight plastic bottle.
Other attributes of the True Lite Stove are its absolute silent operation and SUITABILITY AS AN EMERGENCY BACKUP STOVE IN THE EVENT YOUR PROPANE, BUTANE OR WHITE GAS STOVE FAILS. Denatured alcohol is a relatively environmentally friendly fuel, burns exceptionally clean and doesn’t leave soot on cookware or utensils. Denatured alcohol is extremely easy to find and is commonly available at most camping outfitters as well as paint and hardware stores. TRUE LITE STOVES ARE EXTREMELY VERSATILE AND WILL ALSO OPERATE WELL ON HEET (fuel line antifreeze), ETHYL ALCOHOL (Everclear Liquor 190 and 151 proofS), ISOPROPYL RUBBING ALCOHOL 90% AND "ESBIT" SOLID FUEL TABLETS.
? Fuels - (Denatured Alcohol recommended but also works great with the following)
1. DENATURED ALCOHOL…(Ethyl Alcohol)…Denatured alcohol found at your local paint store or hardware store (i.e. Home Depot, Lowe’s etc.) is mainly used in marine stoves and heaters and as a shellac thinner, mostly ethanol (ethyl alcohol) with methanol or some other irritating substance added to render it undrinkable.
2. HEET…Fuel line antifreeze…Yellow container HEET (do not use red container ISO-HEET) is mostly methyl alcohol (methanol) and does not have as high a heat combustion as ethyl alcohol. That said, it can be found at almost any auto parts or service station and is more easily found than ethyl alcohol.
3. ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL…Rubbing Alcohol…This stove will operate on 90% isopropyl alcohol in an emergency, it is the least favorable of fuels and leaves a lot of soot on pots and pans, it burns with a much lower heat output than other fuels. Isopropyl Alcohol can be found at most drug stores and markets.
4. PURE ETHANOL…Everclear Liquor - 190 proof… Everclear is a brand of neutral grain spirit that is available at concentrations of 95% alcohol (190 proof), in contrast to hard liquors such as rum and vodka, which typically contain 40%–60% alcohol (80–120 proof). Since 95.6% ethanol and 4.4% water form an azeotrope (meaning that simple distillation cannot remove any of the remaining water), 191-proof spirits are the maximum proof that is available from the distilled beverage industry.
5. ESBIT…Hexamine fuel tablet…This is a form of solid fuel in tablet form, the tablets burn smokeless, have a high energy density, do not liquefy while burning and leave no ashes. A number of alternative names are in use, including heat and solid fuel tablet.
? WINDSCREENS
Our windscreens are for the recreational outdoors man who understands the necessity of a properly fitted windscreen, when the windscreen is limited by its inability to adjust to the users needs, the user needs to look at a windscreen that can adjust to fit those needs. So, what does the recreational backcountry cook need? Simple, a properly vented windscreen that can adjust to fit their size cook pot while allowing the ideal 1/4" to 1/2" of ventilation space around the circumference of their cooking pot. The extra length of our 30” windscreen allows for plenty of overlap while allowing you the ideal ventilation space around the circumference of your cooking pot. By allowing the user to adjust for more space around the cook pot provides for better "chimney" venting and faster burn times, less space provides more controlled ventilation and usually, better fuel efficiency. Cut from solid stock rolled aluminum and delivered to you blank and un-vented allows the user to custom fit their new windscreens to fit their own individual cook pot and stove combination, thus allowing the user the opportunity to create the most efficient cooking system possible. Light duty tin snips can be used for custom fitting your windscreens venting and handle placement.
Experiment with your desired configuration before cutting the windscreen!

OLD PUNKER ALCOHOL STOVE
FROM SWEDEN
The stove has a black glass lid (3-4 very light scratches on it) that covers the burner when not in use.
The shove requires a 12-1/4" X 12-1/4" cutout in the counter-top and measures 12-11/16" X 12-11/16" at the outer dimensions of it's mounting flange. The lowest part of the stove measures about 5-1/4" below of the level of the mounting surface.
I pulled the stove out of service to make room for a larger 2-burner
stove in my boat. As you can see from the picture, the unit / burner
works just fine. Please note that this stove, like most other non-pressurized
alcohol stoves, burns a little carbonizing and will create a little soot
on the bottom of a cooking pan
