RHODOLITE GARNET

From the Greek "Rhodon" (rose) this gem has a "Rhododendron Red" color that creates images of pastel sunsets. Rhodolite and in fact all colors of Garnet are acceptable as January birthstones. It is found in the Unites States as well as Ceylon, Tanzania, Rhodesia and Madagascar. The hardness varies from 6.5 to 7.5 and it is reasonably durable. Rhodolite has a refractive index from 1.72 to 1.87 and a specifIc gravity of 3.3 to 4.1.
